SolarQuestTM 98	Tour de Sol Adventure Quest

No. 58 NFA Sol Machine, Team NFA, Newburgh, NY

The Newburgh Free Academy Sol Machine is a three-wheeled solar-powered vehicle constructed by students at the school. Weighing 1000 pounds, energy generated by a 12 foot by 6 foot solar panel is stored in 6 12-volt lead-acid batteries which power an 8 horsepower motor capable of powering the car up to 55 mph. High school teacher Lee Cabe sees the project as an excellent opportunity for students to learn about future technologies such as photovoltaics and electric vehicles, while having fun competing in events around the country.
